8 Common Myths About Sex
You’ve heard them…
“Painful sex? Drink a glass of wine. Personal massagers? Oh they’ll desensitize you.”
The myths surrounding sex are plentiful and they’re not doing anyone – especially us women – any favors. From well-meaning advice passed down through generations to modern misconceptions perpetuated by media and pop culture – these myths can impact our ability to enjoy a fulfilling and healthy sex life.
That, my friends, is not to be taken lightly.
Intimacy is deeply tied to our physical and emotional well-being with studies showing that people who prioritize sex actually live longer.
I think that’s something we can all get behind. Let’s uncover the truth behind some of the most common myths surrounding sex and intimacy…
1. "You're born with a high or low sex drive."
Sex drive can fluctuate throughout a person's life due to various factors such as hormones, stress, and relationship dynamics.
2. "Sex should always be spontaneous and effortless."
Responsive desire is far more common than the spontaneous, need-it-now lust Hollywood is obsessed with. It's perfectly normal to plan and prioritize intimacy. Scheduling quality time with your partner can help build anticipation and set the mood.
3. "Sex diminishes with age."
Your sexual wellness doesn’t come with an expiration date. While our bodies change over time, your intimate health can (and should) be a priority throughout your life as it’s deeply connected to your physical and emotional well-being.
4. "Only penetrative sex counts as 'real' sex."
There are many ways to be intimate through touch that produce a number of sexual health benefits. Penetration is not the end-all-be-all.
5. "If you're not having multiple orgasms, something is wrong."
An orgasm is fantastic, but goal-oriented thinking can get in the way of a good experience. The act of sex is healthy with or without the big O.
6. “A glass of wine helps with painful intercourse.”
Shockingly, this guidance often comes from gynecologists (which really makes my blood boil). While wine may help you relax, it certainly does not address the underlying cause of painful intercourse. It’s important to get to the root cause of the pain (could be vaginismus, vulvodynia, vaginal dryness, endometriosis to name a few) and develop a treatment plan around it.
7. “If you’re aroused, you shouldn’t need lubricant.”
Vaginal wetness isn't necessarily tied to your level of arousal, even in younger women. Various factors influence the need for lubrication, such as your menstrual cycle, pregnancy, health conditions, menopause, and certain medications like antidepressants. And contrary to popular belief, increasing water intake won't alleviate this issue. A quality, FDA Cleared, water-based lubricant belongs in every bedside table.
8. “If you use a personal massager, you’ll become desensitized.”
There is no evidence that your vulva or clitoris can become desensitized from vibration. Your body is smarter than that. In fact, there’s overwhelming evidence that vibration (which is expert at bringing blood flow to the genitals) helps to:
Increase lubrication
Decrease pain
Promote orgasm
So what’s the problem, exactly?
For too long, personal massagers or “vibrators” have been categorized as “toys” and marketed in crude, often unseemly ways. This may be fine for some, but off-putting for others and – as a result –they have been denigrated by many in our culture and are largely misunderstood.
But the fact of the matter is, these devices have a lot to offer. And they’re not all created equal.
Tools like The Golden Hour Kit were designed in partnership with clinicians to help women rediscover their bodies and get this important part of their lives back. In a recent study, women who used the Golden Hour Kit just once per week saw profound results:
So, let’s put the myths and half-truths to bed once and for all. And may I recommend prioritizing our own time between the sheets…
