Meet Dr. Barb DePree

“Women are discovering their own passions and strengths and ready to invest in themselves, and I feel fortunate to be a part of those new and improved outcomes.”

Tabu’s greatest strength? Our brilliant medical advisors. It’s about time our community got to know Tabu advisor Dr. Barb DePree - a pioneer in the field of midlife women’s health.

A bit of background

A gynecologist and certified menopause practitioner with the North American Menopause Society, Dr. DePree’s personal mission has been to educate women about anything to do with their health so they can make informed decisions for their own medical care. The focus of her practice is unique, and especially tailored to our Tabu community.

Dr. Barb DePree is a leader in the field of midlife women’s sexual health. From peri to post menopause - helping women demystify the false narratives around safe and effective treatment options is a challenge, but a fulfilling one.

Since entering the field of women’s health as an OB/GYN in 1991, Dr. DePree has moved through different areas of the field, gaining expertise and perspective over time. She began her medical practice with a deep love of surgery, finding that gynecology was the perfect arena to pursue her passions of working in the operating room and helping women.

Dr. DePree discovered a massive unmet need. The medical community (even the gynecological community) was ignoring women’s sexual health - particularly when it came to menopause care.

“Sexual health is nearly never discussed in the setting of routine care. I saw the negative impact this brought to relationships.”

The gap in knowledgeable care for perimenopausal and menopausal women led Dr. DePree to make caring for that underserved phase of life her mission. Her work in the field of midlife women’s health led to her being named the 2013 NAMS Certified Menopause Provider of the year for “exceptional contributions to menopause care”.

In line with her focus on women’s sexual health and menopause, she is also certified in high risk breast cancer genetics and risk assessment and management.

“I now truly value being brought along on some very personal and intimate life events to help women better navigate this season of their lives.”

Dr. DePree today

These days, Dr. DePree has fulfillment in both her personal and professional life - through spending time checking off bucket list travel with her husband, and acting as the director of Women’s Midlife Services at Holland Hospital in Holland, Michigan.

Our founder, Natalie, came across Dr. DePree through her educational website, Middlesex MD. The site features blogs, podcasts, and other material - all medically vetted and geared toward bridging the sexual knowledge gap for women in peri and post menopause.

“The biggest challenge I’ve faced in my practice? Re-educating women on the false narratives they have been hearing about safe and effective treatment options in menopause.”
